Remembering Katrina

Five years ago today I watched in horror from NC as Katrina barreled through a city I love with a passion that not many understand.

Five years ago I was devastated, in tears, watching the scenes that were broadcast across the nation.

Five years ago I was desperately trying to get in touch with some of my best friends. Petrified that they had stayed, I had begged them just days before to flee.

Five years ago I said "Thank You God" when I heard that these people had managed to get out.

Today, I still tear up thinking about it. I still tear up hearing news reports about the efforts to bring NOLA back from the devastation.

Today, I'm thankful that these wonderful people were safe and that they escaped relatively unscathed.

I'm thankful that we were able to share a wedding two years ago back in NOLA (where a wedding in July will MELT you).

Michael & Emily - two of my besties.

Mr. Potts & Emily pre-wedding two nights before

Michael and me - love this guy!

Gus and Trey - my two other besties

Side note - Red Bull and Tequila is not the best option after a full afternoon of consumption. Although it leads to great times, you may not remember all of them!

Birthday Dinner Note: My dinner was super duper fantabulous. Unfortunately, not a single picture was taken. Mayra has shamed me with her food pictures and now I want a new camera. Any recommendations?

I have been watching the Today show this morning and tearing up. Katrina showed the US just how destructive nature can be...

It's just all so sad. But the wedding looked like a blast. Glad to hear you had a great birthday dinner!

I'm so sad at the way Katrina was handled. I don't know anyone that was directly affected (other than blog friends), so for me, it just seems so abstract. I don't know if that makes sense.

Anyway, if you're looking for a camera, it kind of depends on what you're looking to spend. If you want a GOOD camera, with lenses and all that, I'd stick with Canon. I have a Canon Rebel EOS xs and LOVE it. It cost me about $600. I upgraded from my kit lens to a nice little 50mm portrait lens which was $100 (pretty much the most inexpensive of ALL lenses). And now I'm looking at more of a wide angle lens that will run me about $400. That's probably more info than you wanted, but if you really are wanting to explore photography, that's some good starting info :) Plus, I think Mayra shoots with a Nikon so it could be a fun little rivalry, lol.

It's crazy how in such a short span peoples lives were changed forever.

I can't believe it's still five years ago. It still hurts to think about all of it. It seems like it was just yesterday.

Hi my lovely lady, how are you today Kim? Did you have a nice weekend? Hope Mr. Potts is taking good care of you (as I know he is) and letting you enjoy birthday month :) Can't wait until we can get together and cry/hug/laugh/cheers/celebrate all the good times and memories and toast to all the great things ahead. Just a note to say THANK YOU for your gorgeous email last week, sorry I've been preoccupied with Matt's mama here...I love you so much and you are one amazing friend my dear!

Big, big kissies honey! xooxox - Trishy

PS - In regards to Katrina, it has definitely been sad to relive it year after year, and to believe it's been five years is amazing. I have never told our Katrina story on my blog before but have it drafted...I think I might publish it this week...just remember all the great things about New Orleans - as I am sure Lisa would agree - come hell or high water, you can't take the spirit out of the people of the greater Louisiana/Gulf Coast, it's in our blood and in our hearts forever!! oxoxox
